Where To Eat

Dining is a very important facet that must accompany the perfect holiday experience. Mombasa has several local eateries for you to try out.

Mombasa Coffee House – Moi Ave, City Centre
Take the opportunity to escape above Moi Ave for fresh coffee and snacks, or local meals away from the daily grind.

Little Chef Dinners Pub – Moi Ave City Centre
This is a funky green-hued pub-restaurant dishing up big, tasty portions of authentic Kenyan and international dishes from Pilau to Stroganoff. The 1st-floor bar has a pool table and a great breezy balcony, one of the most relaxed places in town for a beer. The company has a couple more outlets in the area, but this is by far the nicest.

Siesta Bar and Restaurant – Nyali Road

This is possibly the only Mexican restaurant in East Africa, set in a fine garden above the harbour by the Nyali Bridge. It’s great for a sunset beer, sangria (or tequila if you’ve got the cojones) and the near-authentic food comes highly recommended.

Island Dishes – Kibokoni Rd Old Town
Once your eyes have adjusted to the dazzling strip lights, feast them on the tasty menu at this Lamu-themed canteen. Mishkaki (kebabs), chicken tikka, fish, biriyani, fresh juices to eat in or take away.

Blue Room Restaurant – Haile Selassie Rd City Centre
The Blue Room is hugely popular for its fast food – anything from cakes and sandwiches to curries, steaks and pizzas. Drinks are made with filtered water and there are two back-up generators in case of power cuts. There’s also a highly recommended ice-cream parlour.

Hunter’s Steak House – Mkomani Rd Nyali Königsallee
Hunter’s is a very popular high-class restaurant for tourists. It is close to Tamarind, clearly displaying the influence of its German owners in the parade of huge, delicious meat dishes

IL COVO – Italian and Japanese Cuisine
Il Covo is one of the most popular, top dining restaurants in North Coast, formerly a holiday house on two floors overlooking the white sandy Bamburi beach 12 km north of Mombasa Island. There is an upper deck which has two ocean facing balconies, one of which serves fresh sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki. The lower veranda overlooks the beach, a romantic gazebo juts out onto the sea. The Italian cuisine is renowned for its originality, and the menu consists of a wide range of original pasta dishes, Italian pizzas, fresh starters, salads including a variety of fish Carpaccio, tuna and red snapper, fresh lobsters, prawns, calamari and octopus all depending on the day’s catch.

Mubin’s – this outdoor open air restaurant is popular for decades. Mubin’s serves everything from the famous finger licking Chicken Tikka (barbequed chicken Tandoori) to naan (Indian flatbread), it is best known for its “shillingi shillingi” (once sold for One Shilling) consists of tasty marinated Mishkaki, (beef / mutton cubes) barbequed and served on thin wooden skewers in front of you on a jiko (charcoal grill).

Yuls Beach Bar – located on Bamburi beach right next to Bamburi Beach Hotel. This is a hot spot for tourists – the greatest place to hang out with friends and enjoy the best Italian Gelato Ice-cream and mouth-watering burgers, pizzas and sea-food. Tourists like to sit and enjoy a social afternoon on the beach deck for lunch, drinks, snacks or ice-cream as they watch the tide come in. If you are looking for a cool place to hang out after water sports then this is the place to be.
The Tamarind Restaurant is the best restaurant serving sea-food in North Coast Mombasa. Enjoy the freshest seafood on a creek that overlooks the Old harbour. This restaurant/hotel also offers the best lunch/dinner experience in a romantic setting on a dhow (sailing boat) where you can enjoy a tour around Tudor Creek while sipping on the house cocktail – “Dawa” before you dock to enjoy your meal.

Moorings Restaurant – a restaurant in the North Coast of Mombasa that was built in 1994 on a buoyant platform and has been floating since then on the scenic Mtwapa creek. This is the best experience for people to dine at as it is the only floating restaurant in East Africa. The restaurant is popular for sea-food lovers to enjoy their expertly prepared fresh fish, lobster, crab and prawns. They also offer a delicious landlubber menu offering steak, chicken and pasta.
